Brown Square Health Center
Named for the historic Brown Square area in northwest Rochester, Brown Square Health Center was established in 1973. Brown Square was originally housed in the old Empire Mall on Lyell Avenue and moved across the street to the bank building at 175 Lyell Avenue around 1985. In 2005, the Center moved to its current location at 322 Lake Avenue. Located in a plaza-type setting, this site offers patients spacious parking and a bus stop just outside of the facility. Keep watch for new eye-catching signage to grab your attention while travelling on Lake Avenue.
Once inside the health center, patients can access a full complement of comprehensive services including adult and pediatric primary care, obstetrics and gynecology, and adult and pediatric dentistry. There is also an on-site pharmacy for convenience in filling prescriptions. Brown Square Health Center has a longstanding residential program and hosts up to six URMC medical residents each year. [The National Service Corps offers students educational payback grants to work at sites like ours.] Some of the past residents are now fulltime family practitioners at the Health Center.
Brown Square patients enjoy a trusting personal relationship with their medical and dental providers, who also extend their services to local refugee populations. The Health Center keeps fulltime translators on staff who speak Burmese, Somali, Spanish, Ukrarnian and Vietnamese. Translation services can be arranged upon request for many other languages. Brown Square medical and dental providers are culturally sensitive and aware of the needs of diverse populations.
As with all of the Jordan Health Centers, financial counselors are available to work one on one with patients to identify insurance options and reduce costs through a sliding fee scale. We encourage you to speak with them by calling 585.423.2858.
Brown Square is Jordan’s closest comprehensive healthcare center to Rochester Housing Authority residential facility Glenwood Garden. In 2011, Jordan was awarded a grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to create three new access points for healthcare within the City of Rochester: Andrews Terrace, Kennedy Tower, and Glenwood Gardens. Reducing the transportation barrier to care, each residential facility will house one medical and dental suite to offer basic primary care for residents and local neighbors. As a Jordan patient, residents can access a larger compliment of care at any of Jordan’s comprehensive health centers: Anthony L. Jordan Health Center, Brown Square Health Center, Woodward Health Center. Just one way Jordan is Meeting Patients Where They Are.
