The Podiatry Department at Anthony L. Jordan Health Center wants you to know why thousands of limbs are amputated due to diabetic foot infections. Elevated blood sugars and the lack of blood flow make the lower extremities susceptible to non-healing infections. Treatment can require costly diagnostic tests, antibiotics, and wound care. It can take up to one year for full healing to occur.
Amputations resulting from diabetic ulcers are twice as common in minorities. Half of those will lose the other limb within five years. To minimize these infections and amputations, experts in the Podiatry Department of Anthony L. Jordan Health Center recommend that diabetic foot care screenings be done for all diabetics shortly after diagnosis.
Our screenings include an educational component designed to teach patients the signs and symptoms of foot infections so they can identify any potential problems and enlist the aid of their podiatrist as early as possible. Early diagnosis and treatment maximize a patient's chances for recovery.
Many diabetics at some point will complain of numbness in their feet if their blood sugars are out of control during the course of their disease. Often, this results in the patient injuring his or her feet without even knowing it. For this reason, diabetics should never walk barefoot.
Diabetic patients should always follow good foot hygiene and never do any self-care. Avoid the use of over-the-counter foot remedies without a doctor’s recommendation. Never use razor blades or abrasive scrubs. Sudden changes of any kind should be reported, even if there is no pain present.
Routine diabetic foot care at the Anthony L. Jordan Health Center is covered by most insurance plans on a frequency of once every 60 days. Patients with more chronic conditions may require more frequent visits. Routine foot care visits to the podiatrist by diabetics reduce the occurrence of diabetes-related foot infections, therefore minimizing amputations and mortality, and increasing quality of life.
Patients with foot deformities (for example, bunions, hammer toes, corns, calluses, and fungal toenails) are at a higher risk for infections when combined with poorly fitting shoes.
